ISS

Organisation

The Istituto Superiore di Sanita (ISS) is the leading Italian institute of scientific-technical research, control and advice in public health. In addition, the ISS is a public advisory body in the field of radiation protection regulation. In the Technology and Health (TESA) Department consolidated expertise in radiation research exists in radiation protection, radiation dosimetry, environment radioactivity, radiation biology and biophysics, epidemiology and modeling. At ISS, there is also consolidated expertise outside radiation protection field. An inter- and multi-disciplinary network has already been created among the Departments of Technology and Health, Cell Biology and Neurosciences, Environment and Primary Prevention, Hematology, Oncology and Molecular Medicine, Infectious, Parasitic and Immune-Mediated Diseases and the National Centre for Epidemiology, Surveillance and Health Promotion. Based on this inter-disciplinarity, ISS has availability of, or access to, several research facilities. Especially, ISS has a strong and continuous collaboration with INFN (Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics) and may represent the optimal link to large infrastructure (in particular charged particle accelerators and underground laboratories). ISS has been and is presently involved in several EURATOM projects.

Role in the Project

ISS commitments concern: WP1As PM, ISS participates to the POM board activities. WP2-As member of MELODI (with role in the Bureau as Treasurer, and involvement in the Research Infrastructure Working Group), and of EURADOS (as council member and active participation in “Retrospective dosimetry” and Medical dosimetry), and due to its strong relationship with the medical scientific community (with coordination activity of Working Groups on Quality Assurance in Radiological Sciences) ISS contributes to the development of roadmaps and priorities for research on low dose risk, on dosimetry and safety culture supporting the implementation of the revised European Basic Safety Standards. ISS is also member of the European ALARA Network (EAN), of the sub-network EAN-NORM, and participates to the EAN Working group on the ALARA Culture. WP3-ISS will contribute to the priority setting at European and national level. WP5-For its central position in the National Health System, ISS can play a leading role for accessing and coordinating stakeholders and authorities. ISS has lead an OPERRA TG4.3 .2 “Identifying national and international stakeholders, collecting stakeholder opinions and analysing feedback on research priorities”. WP6- ISS will contribute to define quality criteria and to update and enlarge the list of large infrastructures, in particular exposure facilities, relevant for the research needs of all radioprotection platforms.
