The University of Latvia UL is one of the largest comprehensive and leading research universities in the Baltic States. At the University of Latvia, research is conducted in 50+ research fields, which represent four main areas of inquiry: the humanities, sciences, social sciences, and education sciences. UL is the leading organisation in the nuclear and radiation research and training in Latvia. UL provides courses on radiation safety for industry employers working with ionizing radiation. In the research on radiation and environment UL is developing new methods for the identification of radionuclides in different media; monitoring of the potentially polluted regions of Latvia, acquiring data about migration and accumulation of radionuclides in forest ecosystems, soils and waters for a longer period; continues to carry out the analysis of drinking water samples in the different regions of Latvia, assessing the concentration of radionuclides. The Department of Radiation Processes of the University of Latvia has accredited laboratory for dosimeters calibration and radiation measurements. University of Latvia is also a leading association EURATOM-UL in Latvia for the participation in the EURATOM fusion programmes and BRILLIANT regional collaboration in EURATOM fission programmes.

Role in the project

In collaboration with Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development of Latvia UL contributes to WP2 and WP3 by identifying and working with the problems of radiation safety in both general and specific research needs of the region. UL has also contributions to WP5 and WP6.
